Keeping school-and-home communication open and productive is a super way to support your child's education.

This week, parents across the district are meeting with teachers to talk about how to help their child have a successful school year. Many have already viewed their child’s individual California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) reports by logging into their Parent PowerSchool accounts so they can discusss them with the teacher and set goals for their children.

On Thursday, September 19, 2019, the Campbell Union School District (CUSD) Governing Board adopted Resolution #2019-20-10, declaring its intent to transition from at-large to by-trustee area Board elections. In by-trustee area elections, each Board member must reside within the designated trustee area boundary and be elected only by the voters in that trustee area. Voters would only vote for one seat on the school district’s board.*

Currently, the CUSD’s five Governing Board members are elected under an at-large election system, where trustees are elected by voters in the entire District. Under the California Voting Rights Act (CVRA), at-large elections are impermissible if they result in racially polarized voting.

“We don’t believe our current form of elections violates the CVRA,” said Superintendent Shelly Viramontez. “We do believe that it is in the public interest to begin the transition to trustee-area elections to protect the district from a CVRA claim—valid or not.”

With adoption of the resolution, the District now has 90 days of ‘safe harbor’ to complete the transition to by-trustee area elections. The transition process will include opportunities for public input with regard to delineating the trustee area boundaries.

Even as children grow older and more independent, families play a key role in making sure students get to school safely every day and understand why attendance is so important for success in school and on the job.

One absence amounts to missing more than 5 hours of classroom instruction and learning. 

DID YOU KNOW?  

  • Students can be chronically absent even if they only miss a day or two every few weeks. 

  • Attendance is an important life skill that will help your child graduate from college and keep a job. 

  • Absences can be a sign that a student is losing interest in school, struggling with school work, dealing with a bully or facing some other potentially serious difficulty. 

  • By 6th grade, absenteeism is one of three signs that a student may drop out of high school. 

  • By 9th grade, regular and high attendance is a better predictor of graduation rates than 8th grade test scores.

Under general supervision of the Site Coordinator, Recreation Leaders will work in the after-school programs to support safe and enriching recreational programs for elementary and middle school students. Responsibilities include supporting youth with homework and plan/lead enrichment activities.

Hours: 
After school to 6:00PM


Hourly Rate:
$15.71-$19.10 Hour

Qualifications:
Education equivalent to the completion of the 12th grade, 48 Accredited College Semester Units or pass Basic Skills Test (district will provide testing)

Having consistent good attendance helps students develop a positive view of school and the importance of attendance. Routines can help families with the busyness of the mornings during the school week.

Good habits help students to attend school regularly and arrive on time.  Because your partnership is key, we offer these tips.

  • Set an early bedtime to ensure rest for the school day

  • Follow a  night time routine: 

  • Set your alarm, leaving extra time for unexpected delays 

  • Lay out clothing and supplies for the next day 

  • Place backpack and shoes near the door  

  • Schedule appointments for after school

  • Only miss school when truly sick. Refer to parent handbook for when your child should remain at home. 

  • Communicate with your child’s school when absent or tardy

  • Have a back-up plan in case of transportation challenges

We heard you! Families in Campbell Union School District’s elementary and middle schools want more information and fewer “robo-calls”.

Now, parents and guardians will be able to use a free and secure mobile app to control which of our notices go to their phone and which go to email or text. The app is an extension of the SchoolMessenger notification system that our schools use to help parents stay up-to-date on important information, such as emergency notices, attendance, time-sensitive announcements, school lunch account balances, and more.

The free SchoolMessenger mobile app can be downloaded for Apple iOS and Android devices from http://go.schoolmessenger.com. A web app version is also available for those who prefer using a web browser.

In the interest of student safety, Campbell Union School District will send a TEST ALERT message to parents, guardians, and emergency contacts listed on each student's official record.

The TEST ALERT message will go out Friday evening, September 6th, to phone numbers and email addresses contained in the student's Emergency Contact form.

civic leaders seated at event“We have the opportunity to support our students and families from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., and it takes many hands to make it all happen,” she said at the District's Back to School Kickoff event this week. Local community leaders (pictured here) joined hundreds of district employees for the all-staff meeting to celebrate accomplishments and reaffirm the commitment to the district’s mission: Educating each child to their highest potential.

“We are fortunate to have the support of many community partners who join us in our mission so that every student can thrive,” Viramontez added. 

The event featured guest speaker Sabba Quidwai, of Apple Inc., (pictured with microphone) who presented inspiring ideas about the future of learning and trends in skill demands of the future workplace. The top two needs: Be able to work on and solve unstructured problems, and be able to communicate.

She said that preparing students for the demands of the future workplace is, itself, a huge unstructured problem. She noted that the district’s Profile of a Graduate (POG) competencies are just what is called for—being self-directed, empathetic, innovative, collaborative and a critical thinker—and encouraged us to keep at this important work and keep sharing our experiences and stories. 
“As global citizens, the more we learn about one another, our challenges and our opportunities, the more we can work together to solve the most pressing issues of our time,” she said.

The event ended with a sequel video about Profile of a Graduate that featured the students of Campbell Union School District describing how they leveraged the POG skills to enhance their learning.

It is part of our district’s Strategic Plan to reinvent the way we educate and inspire today's learners, and one of the four goals outlined in our Local Control and Accountability Plan (LCAP). Launched in the 2018-19 school year, it calls upon individuals—students and the adults who support them—to be Self-Directed, Innovative, a Critical Thinker, Collaborative, and Empathetic.
