"The recent California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) scores reflect a ‘snapshot' in time of our progress towards mastering the Common Core State Standards, but they don’t tell the whole story,” said CUSD Superintendent Eric Andrew.  “We are disaggregating these results and reviewing our other assessment data to pinpoint where we need to bolster our instructional practice and ensure that all of our students succeed.”

He added that schools start this year with the newly adopted curriculum in our classrooms, 1-to-1 technology in nearly all grades, and students who are energized by the project-based learning we are able to provide through community partnerships. "We are going to leap ahead this year,” he said.

As of September 14th, the testing company is shipping the individual student reports to the district office. As soon as we receive them we will mail them to parents. More information about the State assessments and a link to the data is available on our assessment web page.

On September 8, the State Board of Education approved key elements of a new accountability system that evaluates schools and districts in 10 areas critical to student performance. Read the news release.

Your child's safety is my number one concern. Please make sure to follow these rules to allow for safety of you and your child when coming to and leaving school:

*follow the DROP OFF/DRIVE THRU path in the parking lot. DO NOT drop students off in the DRIVE THRU lane and tell them to run through cars.

*There is no stopping in the RED ZONES around the school. This poses a danger to all students trying to cross the streets, but also the cars pulling out into traffic. This means the red zone in the front of the school marquee as well.

*It is against the school safety zone to make a U-Turn in the middle of the street. This causes back ups on the streets in both directions.

*There is no LEFT TURN out of the front parking lot between 7:30 and 3:30 to allow for traffic to flow smoothly to the right and down Cypress Ave.

*Park in the neighborhood respectfully and walk to school.

*Finally, our neighbor's driveways cannot be blocked or their garbage cans moved on trash collection days.

Thank you for ensuring that all students and families at Lynhaven are safe everyday.

One of the most important decision-making groups at Lynhaven is our elected School Site Council (SSC).  The SSC is composed of parents, community members, and representatives from the school’s staff.  They meet 4 times a year, from 3:00-4:00 in the staff room at school to review the school plan annually, review the school budget and make suggestions and/or modifications as necessary, and assist in the evaluation of the school’s programs.  Members are elected by the groups that they represent (parents by parents, classroom teachers by classroom teachers, etc.).  Parent/community representatives and alternates are elected for a two-year term and may stand for election upon the completion of each term.  We are in need of at least 4 members for the SSC. If you're interested in running, please write a short description of your reason why you'd like to be on the SSC and a little about yourself (kids, grades they're in, your profession, etc.) and submit it to our secretary, Maggie in the office. I will comprise the information and send home a ballot in the school Thursday envelopes on  September 15th to be returned by the 21st. Our first meeting will be scheduled in the beginning of October. Please consider being a part of this team.

We had a great first week!  It feels good to be off and running towards another wonderful school year. Don't forget, school begins for all grades at 8:05. If you are challenged to get to school, we have a breakfast program from 7:30-8:00 daily and we'd love to see your children buying breakfast to start their day off right! You are welcome to join them as well.

With the first week done, don't forget that all of your student's belongings; jackets, coats, lunchboxes, waterbottles, backpacks, etc., should be labeled with at least their last name and room number. We donate all lost and found items to local charities before each holiday break. Our Lost and Found is located outside of the front office on the hooks.

We hope you all have had a wonderful first day back to school! It is really important that you read the Lynhaven Student handbook as there are some changes.

Lunchtime VisitorsComing to school to eat with your child at lunch needs to be reserved for a special occasion. It limits your child's social growth and hinders their independence when it's done too often. They don't get to practice problem solving, and building relationships with peers. We know how special it is to for families to take time out of their day to come and eat with their child but unfortunately not on an every day basis. Please let your child's teacher and Administration know when you'd like to come. As a reminder, non-school aged siblings are not allowed at school at lunch as they pose a safety risk to both themselves and our students. All families are welcome at classroom celebrations, our all school BBQ's, and our PTA events. My main concern is the safety of your student and making their years at Lynhaven the most successful.

Birthday Celebrations

We encourage parents to attend classroom academic celebrations and holiday parties. This builds a sense of community and shows your child that you value their hard work and accomplishments. Birthday celebrations are allowed in class provided that the teacher receives notice within 24 hours to coordinate an appropriate time to cause the least disruption. Birthdays should be celebrated outside of school. Should you choose to bring a treat to share with the class, cupcakes are no longer allowed. Smaller, individual treats like cookies, brownies, yogurt, fruit cups, popsicles, etc are encouraged. As a reminder, balloons brought to school for a child's birthday or other celebrations will remain in the office until dismissal.

We appreciate your support with these changes. Please don't hesitate to stop by the office if you have any questions.
