In case you were not able to see the various colleges represented on our campus last week, during our Door Decorating Day, here's a sample of some of them. As part of our AVID journey, we are preparing students for their future and reminding them that it begins in TK and Kindergarten! Students helped their teachers decorate their classroom door to show off facts about various colleges. Then they were able to take a walking tour of the all the doors and learn about different schools. They found out where their teachers and administrators went to college and maybe where they'd like to go too! They did a great job researching facts about schools including the top majors, location, and the all important mascots!

Recently it's been brought to my attention through parents and our neghbors, that people are not respecting the neighborhood. We have people who are making illegal and unsafe decisions when parking and dropping off students. We have been contacting the traffic enforcement department who will come out and cite any car that is:

-blocking a driveway

-blocking a crosswalk

-making illegal u-turns in the middle of the street

-parking/dropping off in the red zones in front and back of the school

-moving garbage cans to park a car for drop-off and not moving them back

We also ask that you do not allow your children to dart in between cars in the parking lots. We all want children to be safe upon arriving and leaving school. This starts with you. Please make every effort to model for you children the appropriate ways to drive and park in the neighborhood.

WHAT A FUN DAY WE HAD! Thank you to all of our familes and PTA members who came out today to help us with our rescheduled Walk-A-Thon.  We could not have done it without all the hands that helped, teachers included! No better way to get in almost 12,000 steps than with surrounded by all those smiling faces!  Many thanks for all of the donations from T-shirt purchases and extra fundraising from some of the kids. This is how we support our school programs and field trips!  Prizes will be handed out soon.

Please join us Thursday, 4/19, at Boudin for a Dining Out fundraising opportunity!

State testing will begin soon. Formerly known as the SBAC (Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium), the test is now referred to as CAASSP (California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress)  Important information:

-All 3rd through 5th grade students will be tested beginning May 1st.

-Testing will take place for all grades beginning PROMPTLY at 8:30 until 10:00. Testing days vary for grades so please talk to your teacher to verify the dates and times. Students arriving AFTER 8:30 will not be permitted into the classrooms and will have to make up the tests.

-Students are encouraged to bring their own headphones for the tests so that they are comfortable. We do have the earbud type headphones for them to use.

-As always, its even more important for our students to get a good night's sleep and eat breakfast during testing.

-We ask that appointments are not scheduled during the testing times.

-Please ask you child's teacher for specific testing days and times. Most importantly, we remind our students to do their best everyday and that this test is one measure of their hard work. We ask that you support this message as well!

Each year we are thrilled to honor a Classified and Certificated employee and a Volunteer of the Year. We are lucky to have such an amazing, dedicated and hard working staff and parent community. This year we are proud to honor:

Certificated employee of the Year - Peggy Gomez-Garcia, 3rd grade teacher

Peggy has taught in CUSD for 17 years and 11 of those have been here at Lynhaven. This year, Peggy has transformed our school with her work on the growth mindset. She has inspired our students to think positively about their abilities most importantly, reminds them that just because they aren’t good at something now, doesn’t mean that they are never going to be good at it.  Students have learned a lot about the development of their brains. She has been a demonstration teacher of growth mindset lessons in almost every classroom. Congratulations Mrs. Gomez-Garcia!

Classified Employee of the Year - Pete Williams, food services manager

Pete Williams, or Mr. Pete,  has worked at our school since 2015 in our cafeteria. In this time, we have seen him embrace our students like his own children. He is always helping our them with anything that he can. His caring for them goes beyond the kitchen. You'll find students chatting with him at lunch time and at school events he regularly attends. Congratulations Mr. Pete, we love having you at our school!

Volunteer of the Year - Angela Barkes-Draz, mother of 3rd grader Cecilia

Angela has been on our campus for almost 4 years, but it feels like she’s been a member of the Lynhaven family for longer than that! She has been dubbed our STEAM LAB Mom and can be found there two days a week.  Angela is happy to help in any classroom. She has been a classroom volunteer the whole time she’s been at Lynhaven and then found her true calling in our STEAM lab when she began creating alongside teachers, lessons around solving every day problems with solutions built using our donations from RAFT and other families. She has helped to get students excited about hands-on learning and they are always excited to see her in the lab. Congratulations Mrs. Draz!
