To help bridge the transition to middle school and see what AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) looks like in middle school, 5th graders visited Monroe this week.

Lynhaven students asked questions about middle school schedules, school lunches, the snack shack, dress code, clubs, and sports. They shared ideas for Spirit Days for next school year and reflected on their future goals.

Melissa Schonig, 5th grade teacher, shared that she really thinks the field trip "helped ease their minds a little bit and started getting them excited for next year."

Heather Johson, 4th and 5th grade teacher added, "It was awesome! I have a some students who are really excited for middle school now."

We hope this is the start of a tradition and thank Monroe Mavericks staff and students for being amazing hosts!

Thank you to all who attended our first annual Lynhaven Arts Showcase on May 3rd. Our first graders opened the event with a short musical performance and students and families were able to enjoy the 2-D and 3-D art on display from all of our grade levels.

Arts education has many benefits, helping students to:

  • Engage with school and reduce stress.
  • Develop social-emotional and interpersonal skills.
  • Enrich their experiences.
  • Handle constructive criticism.
  • Bolster academic achievement.
  • Improve focus.
  • Have fun!

We are so proud of our student artists at Lynhaven!

If you were not able to attend, please enjoy the gallery of student work below. With hundreds of fantastic pieces on display we could not photgraph them all. These represent all of our grade levels.

This year our Innovation Lab Pilot has supported 3rd and 2nd grade. Today was the first day of the pilot for 1st grade. The Innovation Lab time provides students with a rotation of STEAM (Science Technology Engineering Art and Mathematics) and SEL (Social Emotional Learning) enrichment experinces with our Innovation Specialsists. While students are having these experiences, their teachers are released for extended collaboration time with their grade level team.

On day 1 for 1st grade Innovation Lab, students learned about managing emotions with Kimochis with our MTSS Aide Ms. Amelia Burgos, created faces from found materials with Ms. Megan Delaye, and brainstormed inventions with Mr. Jason Pittman.

Our students in grades 3–5 participate in the statewide testing program called the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP). The tests in the CAASPP System provide information to teachers, parents/guardians, and students about students’ progress and readiness for college and career. All students in grades 3-5 will test in English Language Arts and Math. Additionally, students in grade 5 will take a test in Science.

Our school’s testing dates are:

  • April 25th - May 19th

Our goal is to make this testing experience positive and successful for your child. Below are some ways you can help your child at home:

  • Make sure your child gets a good night's sleep.

  • Make sure your child eats a healthy breakfast.

  • Schedule activities and appointments outside of school hours.

  • Encourage your child to do their best.

  • Try some calm strategies
  1.  In any stressful situation, whether it be in competition, at work, or with tests, deep breathing is a great way to help calm one’s nerves. A great strategy to help with this is called 5 Finger Breathing. Students start at the base of their thumb and trace a finger up while inhaling, then slowly trace down their thumb while exhaling. Then move on to your fingers, repeating the breathing pattern. See the images below to help!
  2. Another strategy you could talk about at home is what educational psychologist Dr. Michele Borba calls the 1+3+10 Strategy. Dr. Borba teaches students that when they feel like they are getting tense, they should 1 stop and tell themselves: “Be calm,” then take 3 deep slow breaths, then count slowly to 10.
  3.  Remind your student that feeling anxious is normal! Anytime in life when we have something important on the horizon it is normal for us to feel nervous about it. Sometimes students can compound their anxiety if they think that feeling nervous is abnormal.
